Alternity 2 - Chapter 11

"The Ell Tee will see you now," said the police sergeant who was sitting in the interrogation room with them.

. The police had arrived on the scene almost immediately after the fight and while Beka's opponent was hustled off in an ambulance to the hospital, Tyr's opponent was en route to the morgue. It was only Tyr's identification card that kept them from being arrested on the spot. As it was they were simply being held for questioning.

The door opened and a man entered. There were lieutenant bars on the collar of his uniform, identifying him as the expected lieutenant. The lieutenant was smallish, darker skinned than Tyr, and starting to go bald. He seemed totally unimpressive to Beka until their eyes met and the strength of personality showed through.

"I'm Lieutenant O' Riley. Mike told me I'd be seeing you pretty soon. He also said there would be dead bodies involved when I did. I hate it when he's right."

"Mike?" asked Beka.

"Harkness. He told me that he talked to you earlier today and that I could expect to find you stirring up trouble at Le Chat Noir. Now what happened at the club? Why did you decide that Mr Drummond needed following? And why is there so much interest in an obscure exobiology professor that someone is willing to commit murder to find him?"

Beka and Tyr took turns telling the story, omitting only the portion about Mr Drummond's ability to turn himself insubstantial.

"That still doesn't explain all the interest in Venst," complained O'Riley. "His specialty was the Magog. The only way most people would get interested in his work would be if he found a better way of killing them."

"That may be just what he discovered," said Tyr.

"But why kill him then?" asked O' Riley. "We should be giving the guy a medal."

"Unless someone felt that if they had the data they could auction it off," responded Beka

"Maybe, but I still think there's more to it than that," said O' Riley. He reached into his shirt pocket and removed Beka's ID card. "Here, you might need this," he said.

"Does this mean we're free to go?" asked Tyr.

"It means you're free to go back to your hotel. I still think there's something you're not telling me but so far you two check out clean. We still haven't heard from High Guard on Mobius and probably won't for another couple of days but I'm going to trust Mike when he says you're on our side. I'll have an officer drive you back to your hotel and have someone bring your car back tomorrow " He stopped as if he was thinking something over then continued. "I'm going to get a warrant to search Drummond's house. Based on what you have told me and his actions I can probably get one authorized but it won't happen until day after tomorrow at the earliest. I'll let you know when it comes in and send a squad car to pick you up when it does. Do me a favor and stay out of trouble until then."

The patrolman that was driving them back to their hotel indicated that Beka and Tr were to ride together in the back of the car. The car was small and Beka and Tyr were pressed closely together. The days events and the time difference between local time and her bodies circadian finally caught up with her and Beka dozed off, her head resting on Tyr's shoulder. She awoke to find Tyr supporting her on one arm while he fumbled with the pass key to her room with is free hand. She took the key from his hand and opened the door but didn't remove herself from his grasp.

"You hit that wall pretty hard when Drummond threw you," she said. You should let me check you out."

"I assure you Beka, I'm fine," said Tyr.

"I know, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger but I still want to check you out." She started undoing the fasteners to his tuxedo jacket. He resisted for a minute then relaxed. After she had removed his jacket and shirt Beka stepped back. "You look like you could use a drink," she said. " I saw some complimentary bottles of local liquors in the cabinet under the entertainment console. Why don't you fix yourself something while I change into something more comfortable."
